That is quite bizarre, and should be a useful clue.  If you run M-x
compile with argument `echo foo', are the font-lock-keywords wrong?
How stupid of me! I was actually calling make from a script, and thus I used executable-interpret instead of compile. This has a very limited list of regexps :-( Mea culpa!
