GNU Emacs 21.3.50 and 22.0.50 can handle this, and the font does exist:
pete 153 /\ xlsfonts -fn '-adobe-courier-medium-r-*-11-*-iso10646-1'
-adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--11-80-100-100-m-60-iso10646-1
Is there no other reason thinkable? Does GNU Emacs 23.0.0 still
understand 'font' instead of 'fontset' in a default-frame-alist or
initial-frame-alist?
