shift-space registers as space under Mac OS X

I use S-SPC as a prefix key when in ultra-tex-mode. It works fine when
using the binary built as:
GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin8.0.0)
 of 2005-04-28 on ludwig.
It inserts a space (and fails as a prefix) when using the binary built as:
GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.0)
 of 2006-09-03 on rodrigues.inf.ed.ac.uk

If I type C-h k S-SPC in the old build, the help starts with
 SPC (translated from S-SPC) ...
If I type the same sequence in the nightly build, the help starts with
 SPC...
without any mention of a translation

Both of these were done using the U.S. input method in Mac OS X 10.4.7.

In GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.0)
 of 2006-09-03 on rodrigues.inf.ed.ac.uk
X server distributor `Apple Computers', version 10.4.7
configured using `configure '--without-x' '--prefix=/usr/local''
