The only recent patch to emacsclient affecting the running of the
alternate editor is the one you mention (quoting arguments with
embedded spaces in Windows). The few patches after that are related to
passing focus to Emacs after connecting with it, which never happens
if the alternate editor is called.
If you're using the stock Emacs from CVS, could you please try to
determine exactly what change to emacsclient started the behavior
you're seeing?
