Jan Djärv writes:Ok, it sounds like a X11 server mismatch. Do other Gnome/Cairo applications run fine in that combination?Oops. It had never occurred to me to try anything other than GNU Emacs. But indeed, all the applications using Cairo that I just tried (gnibbles, gnome-printinfo, gnome-search-tool) have the same problem, i.e. they dump core, apparently when they try to output their first text characters. So this problem is not specific to Emacs at all. Sorry for the noise!
You could file a bug on Gnome here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/, or on cairo here address@hidden or here http://bugs.freedesktop.org. Not sure whos bug it is, sounds like cairo.
