How to run epix examples in debian? debin 9.1 has epix 1.2.16-3. Path to example files is /usr/share/doc/epix/examples/. epix-1.2.17_manual.pdf says to do this.

su; apt-get install --allow-unauthenticated -y epix bash emacs epic5 g++ gv;
mkdir scratch/;
cp /usr/share/doc/epix/examples/*.* scratch/;
epix scratch/hello.xp;

Here is the result I get.
epix: Processing scratch/hello.xp:
touch: cannot touch 'epix-6573/scratch/hello.exe': No such file or directory
epix: WARNING: Couldn't create "epix-6573/scratch/hello.exe"
