I had a lot of problems with authentication because I wanted Plone
members to be automatically able to log into FLE.

Try playing around with different configurations when you create you FLE
site (use user database or create new one etc) until it works for you.

Well, you should definitely use "use existing user database", because
then FLE won't create its own acl_users and also it will set the
property "allow_external_users" which will allow authenticated users
that haven't used FLE before to just enter their FLE-specific user
information and continue from there.

And if you use the existing user database, you need to set the initial
administrator account to an existing account (in some acl_users folder
in any of the upper directories), because it won't be created.

With these in mind, FLE should work pretty well under another
authenticating system. We've used it succesfully with Zope's
LDAPUserFolder product to have users authenticated from an LDAP
server, for instance.
