Dedicated console only machine for FluidSynth?? The more CPU the more
simultaneous voices you can have, the more memory the larger the
SoundFont files you can load into memory. My laptop is a PII-366 and it
runs FluidSynth fine, I don't run it on complex MIDI files though (you
could change some FluidSynth parameters like interpolation type to speed
things up). 64MB of RAM is probably adequate, unless you want to load
huge SoundFont files. You also need a sound card supported by your OS,
of course.
