Shadows and Borders

Hello All,

I am new to this list so excuse me if this has been asked before.  Is there 
any mechanism to add
shadows (extrusions), and borders to rendered glyphs.  If there isn't, are 
there any know algorithms
that can do this efficiently.  I would consider coding them up if there are.

Any help would be appreciated.
