I think you are wrong.
if ( ALLOC( ... ) )
expands to
if ( FT_SET_ERROR( MEM_Alloc( ... ) ) )
expands to
if ( ( error = MEM_Alloc( ... ) ) != 0 )
so `error' is correctly initialized.
