I only have the documentation available from fonts.apple.com, which is
... sparse for fvar and friends.

I guess that this is somehow incorporated into FontForge, since George
Williams contributed both MM and GX support.
Main reason to extend ftgrid is trying to debug GX problems Adam has
reported recently to me privately.
