A first step towards making this new renderer generally useful would be to convert it or compile it (using the Crust compiler) to C. The second step would be to give it a good comprehensible low-level interface to consume a path and produce an 8bpp bitmap.

If the font-rs advantages are rooted in parallelism, then I'll just
say that the text layout engines can do that too and totally
compensate for the lack there of in Freetype.
