True, there's only  13 control values in the CVT. That's not really enough for decent hinting, (I know that's a broad assumption, but I've never seen a manually hinted font work well with that few control values

Thanks.  I guess this already answers the problem: It's not a faulty
rendering of FreeType, but `faulty' (this is, not suitable) hinting
for B/W and normal grayscale rendering.  Only with ClearType the
TrueType hints yield acceptable results.
