HiĀ·

I was watching BBC Click this morning (will be repeated on News 24
tomorrow and Sunday, then BBC World 1530 Monday) and Jimmy Wales said
Wikia Search would be open source. Whether that means free software,
I don't know, but you can already do better than Google for
first-choice search anyway... (some other engines have less churn and
behave more ethically, but I acknowledge Google seems to have the
largest database indexed now).

He told me about his search idea before it got announced when I pointed out how bad the searching was on wikipedia. 18 months on it is still as bad. Its much better to use google and add inurl:wikipedia.org. A user edited index will have the same problems that Yahoo had, and I'm not sure I'd want someone's edited list of information links.

Wikipedia has so much information, but its not stored in the right formats. Equations are images, data is in HTML tables etc etc. It could be so much better if data was flagged as that, rather than as text mark-up.

Kind regards, Jon
