OK - new data.  I tried it with 2.4.1 compiled with gcc 3.0.4, latest
cvs compiled with 3.0.4, and an older cvs gcl compiled with gcc 2.x. 
All gcc 3.0.4 compiled versions of gcl failed with the same error when
compiling maxima.  Can anyone else confirm this?  It looks like there
is something funny with how gcc3 is compiling gcl.
