Mike,
I would be happy to test a new binary and see if it gets rid of
the ^M characters.
Possibly the Emacs I am running is a bit old, though I imagine that
Emacs is fairly stable.
An older version of gcl, just a .exe, does not produce the ^M
characters in Emacs, while the new self-installer version (gcl-2.6.1.exe)
does produce them. Since this was a change from an earlier GCL,
I assumed it due to something in GCL.

has both the versions I have used.
