I did this recently from git version 1.2.9 and tarball 1.2.8.
I did not come across it.

Not 64 bit as I use it too.
the last line of configure is
"Type 'make' to build gnome-commander-1.2.8 and then 'make install' to
install"
There must be an error somewhere on the configure output.
