Thanks very much for the patch; I'll try it and report back. I agree in general, but here I'm not really using geiser: it's just being started to help eldoc. In this case, it should be invisible.

With the patch, I get exactly what I'm after (I suppose in a perfect world the REPL buffer would never appear, but the main thing is that the final window layout is what I expect!). Thanks again.
