That message should appear only if there's no active Geiser REPL, or if
for some reason the buffer is not in geiser-mode, or thinks it belongs
to a kind of scheme that is not the one of the REPL, but since you're
explicitly telling it that it's chicken that shouldn't be the case.

So perphaps for some reason geiser isn't able to find the running
REPL. Have you tried, when that was happening, C-c C-z to switch to the
associated REPL?
