I have had this phenomenon some months ago. Unfortunately, I don't
remember what the problem was, but one tool that we use during the
build has this strange failure mode.
I guess I should have fixed it at the time instead of working around
it like you do, but I dimly remember thinking that it was somebody
elses problem (the one who provided the tool).
