* Agenda
- Results of the GHM 2017 participants' survey.
- Financial results of GHM 2017
- legal structures for managing finances
- venue of 2018 GNU Hacker's meeting
* Results of the GHM 2017 participants' survey.
Result of survey:
http://darrington.wattle.id.au/ghm-survey-results.html
- 22 participants / 27 attendees
- We believe the survey is trustworthy (Cronbach Alpah of 0.81)
- high mean is better, low worse. 0 is min, 4 is max.
- In general positive feeling: only 2 real low scoring questions (telling)
- Lowest scoring was number of talks.
+ we should put more effort into calling for presentations next year.
- Else, question around local transport scored low.
+ We should consider arranging local transport options (e.g. hire minibus)
- Aware this survey (very positive), completed only by people who attended.
+ Perhaps we can devise another questionnaire for general GNU hackers?
- The point was made that lack of diversity can be self-reinforcing:
if you don't see people like you speaking at conferences, you are
less likely to go there…
- Reservations were expressed about the inability of non-attendees to
express their dissatisfaction with, e.g., their ability to attend.
* Financial results of GHM 2017
Spreadsheet at
http://darrington.wattle.id.au/ghm.gnumeric
-> Surplus of EUR 1413.50
Large surplus largely due to last minute cancellations and the hotel
gracefully not charging us fully for those.
* legal structures for managing finances
- Reasons for legal entity:
+ minimise risk for organiser / financial organisation
+ able to provide tax invoices
+ increased trust
- Reasons against
+ overkill
- FSFE not equipped to provide service.
- The Society for Free Culture and Software are an option, with
experience, run by chair person of FSFE, Jonas Öberg.
- Renewable Freedom Foundation
- The Commons Conservancy
- Public Software CIC
- FSF
+ perhaps logical choice, as not tangentially related.
- Gnunet e.v. or Guix e.v. should only be last resorts.
- Possibility to found ghm e.v.
+ but concerns about admin overhead
+ tax authority inspections
- jdm will transfer the surplus from this year to FSF unless better
alternative is provided to him
- we will decide on next year's financial structure at next meeting.
* venue of 2018 GNU Hacker's meeting
+ Catonano's Apulia proposal is still present.
- still getting information there
- Catonano unfortunately did not attend the meeting
+ grothoff & rocky proposed new venue:
- home of modern decentralism
- in the jura, Switzerland
- house that is used for events such as these
- websites at synergiehub.ch
- capacity of about 40 in summer
- accomodation in dorms & tents
- hotel not too far away.
- no large meeting room: more like several with capacity of around
20
- unclear what presentation provisions (beamer etc might have to be
sourced separately)
- 10 EUR per night roughly for space at venue.
- accessible by public transport, 1hr from Bern
- Decision should be made by christmas
+ Proposed actions:
+ delegate someone to collect info on proposed venues from local
organisers
+ decide in a month where we hold it
+ Questions to be provided in proposal:
- exact location known?
- overnight cost to stay (cheapest, and hotel-in-area)
- cost to the venue
- capacity of the venue (largest presentation room, total number of participants)
- local contact person(s)
- availability (day, night, # days)
- can the meeting be self-contained at venue
+ JMD will send email asking for answers to specific questions for
local organisers to respond to.
+ We will decide on venue after around ~1month has passed since
email, in GHM organising meeting.
+ Marcel will help
