Yes -- to build gm2, you must build all of gcc, which is not a simple task on most platforms.

Well, I'm gonna let modula go for now. It was mostly out of interest and following some examples in books that I have.
Before you give up on Modula-2, you may want to consider either Mocka ( or XDS (

    There was one version of gcc when configure stuffed all the GNU
    languages into the Makefile.  I manually removed all targets but
    c, c++,
    and gm2.  Then it worked.  I know not why this sometimes happens
