Hello Rob,
I tracked the performance drop down to this commit. You can see that all
tests run much slower after your commit:

Also, I had to build myself libltdl (libltdl.so wasn't build). Don't
know if Gnash still required that .so after the commit:
cd libltdl && ./configure && make
As far as I can see your changes mainly involved Makefiles and such,
so do you have any clue what could be the problem here?
So, it's definitely *not* related to timeline redesign..
