As a general rule, could we name the branches with just the release
number and use non-branching tags for actual releases or release candidates ?

I'd use 'release_0_8_2' for the branch, 'release_0_8_2_rc#' for release
candidates and 'release_0_8_2_final' for the final release.

For reference, current layout:

   Existing Tags:
        release_0_8_2_rc1               (branch: 1.30.4)
        release_0_8_1_final             (revision: 1.30)
        release_0_8_1_rc4               (revision: 1.30)
        release_0_8_1_rc3               (revision: 1.30)

        release_0_8_1_rc1               (revision: 1.30)
