That's a bug in the README, could   you file a bug report ?
GTK doesn't *need* OGL. Indeed the default is to use AGG renderer
always (GTK/AGG/GST).

Try only --enable-gui=sdl, it'll use AGG renderer.
You may also try FLTK as a gui.
