I like the easy-to-remember names we already have:
        - readNetworkShort
        - readNetworkLong

Of course we miss:
        - readNetworkDouble

Fine for me to have that template, 
I'm more concerned about where we'd have these
(as I can always add the three above as inlines)

I think we're deprecating using utility.h for these
kind of things right ?
