Yes, and it compiles and runs without issue here.

I don't have 32-bit versions of all libraries, only ones that are needed for 
backwards compatibility (e.g., OpenOffice.org). My /usr/lib is equivalent 
to /usr/lib64.

It's linking the 64-bit library here.. which is what you wanted, right?

Try configuring with LDFLAGS=-L/usr/lib64 ./configure .. . This should force 
it to look through that directory first.

I believe we don't use pkg-config because we want to use the same code on all 
platforms.
