I have not tried getting a free software desktop computer before, but
if you can't find one, you could look into getting a laptop instead.
I recommend the Lemote YeeLoong 8089_B laptop. It runs gNewSense Parkes

It's not so powerful when it comes to RAM, but it's very useful for
terminal work and it can browse with Iceweasel. Mine has trouble with
Javascript-heavy websites, so I use the NoScript addon to make them run
reasonably fast.
In any case, I wish you good luck looking for a desktop! :)
