Right - but I've already brought this up here.  I said I was getting that
error, and enumerated the possibilities and then said something to the
effect that "the cable must be right, because I can use the phone as a
modem". But I had no way to know that there could be a cable that was only
partly usable.

Well, I'm not using a 3100, 8100 OR a DAU-4F or S.    I think it was DA*-3*,
but I'll know tonight.
