I have the DKU-5 (not Nokia brand) and it works fine with Nokia PC Suite
under VMware. The reason I bougth it was that my USB IR device was not very
well supported under Linux and gnokii failed to properly connect to the
phone (I was a bit annoyed at the time, but it probably was for the
best, considering the current circunstances).

Anyway, I still wanteto test gnokii now with the DKU-5 cable on the phone,
but I'm afraid of the same happening to me and I really can't afford having
my phone damage now (I'm studying abroad and not only I would have to
wait until easter vacations to go to have it fixes, but I would loose
touch with my folks for all that time).

Do you think this problem is IR-specific (and therefore safe to use it
with the DKU-5), or do you think is phone related and it could happen
regardless of the communication method? Has anybody sucessfully used the
phone with the cable?
