/etc/bluetooth/link_key prevents connection

FTR: I was trying and trying like hell to connect my Nokia 6310i via
Bluetooth again after some months, but the connection was always refused
- until I finally removed /etc/bluetooth/link_key, which seems to have
been a leftover from the last connection(?)

However, it finally works now, but does anybody know what that file is
good for? How could it prevent the connection?

My platform is Gentoo Linux, gnokii-0.6.0, last version I used was
