Received SMS not showing in xgnokii

Hi, I am running gnokii and specifically xgnokii 0.6.3 on Fedora Core 1 with a 
Nokia 5110. It seems to work well except for incoming SMS. The phone shows 
there is a message or messages received but xgnokii does not see them or 
display them dynamically. I have however opened the SMS window on occasions and 
read messages that have come in. It just doesn't seem to reliably update. 
Surely I don't have to manually poll for messages. It should just say there are 
new messages right ?

Also the battery level displayed never shows more than about a third.
What have I missed here ?
