Think of it as the design of someone who thinks it horrid that calling
`rename' on a source tree would lead to pain and who wanted to
minimize the cases where that pain would result.

Yes, the location of the tag for a directory was an explicit design
choice --- I did consider the parent dir alternative.

And remember -- `inventory' was first (and for a substantial amount of
time) implemented as an invocation of the program `find' so, at least
once upon a time, it was quite simple.
