Would it be too tricky or space-consuming to repeat the description in
each revision directory?  Or too state-based and error-prone to move it
to each new patch along with the ++revision-lock directory?

Either of these would solve versioning, per-branch, and mirroring
problems.  Each would also introduce its own tradeoffs, though.
