But you still need the external tool to know
- how to traverse the trees,

The same way as find does.

- where to put the result of the merge of each file

In TREE/$filename

- how to report errors

That's not tla-specific, it's tool specific. In some cases, it will pop up a GTK dialog box, in other cases, it will output to the console, etc.

- how to tell tla that the merge added

File is present that didn't used to be

/deleted/

File is absent that used to be present

moved some files

Not detected, not necessary to detect.
