Very [OT], of course. I expect some unsubscribes as a result of
saying this.

There are many reasons to reject the current US administration in the
upcoming election. Too many to elaborate -- they are that bad. And
yet, that badness reflects and reinforces a schism in U.S. culture.
To a minority (with voting superiority so both vote and, start getting
your non-voting friends to vote) the current administration's f-ups
look like the way forward.

The composition of the U.S. Supreme Court, given the expected
resignations or deaths, is a critical long-term issue.

U.S. Citizens: Start here (or any of dozens of other points) and think
for yourself.

And, if any of you have any insight into what early 20th century
intellectuals in Germany should have done to prevent the establishment
and multi-year operation of a facist state, please give me a clue.
I'm sure that this minor post isn't the most effective alternative.
Maybe within 10 years it will mean my death.

The cited /. thing I think is a good, clear example if you think it
through. The two candidates in the U.S. who have a chance of winning
aren't apparently all that different but one radical, profound,
unignorable difference is the question of who they'll nominate to fill
slots on the U.S. Supreme Court which will undoubtedly open up in the
next 4.5 years. For that reason alone, dump Bush.
