But then you don't get coherent changesets with good summaries.

A good compromise solution would be something like dtla, which has both
automated commits for every change in one (usually short-lived) archive,
and user-initiated commits for coherent changesets in the "main" archive.

Of course you don't need to use dtla to do this - the only slightly non-trivial
things about dtla are the file alteration monitoring and the background
mirroring, neither of which are really necessary.
