re all,

from a recent exchange with Jason about ads appearing on dynebolic.org and
dyne.org pages, here comes an issue that we both think is worth and important
to debate here: ads, indeed.

problem is that most ad programs include lots of proprietary software :(
at dyne.org we use google ads and we ended up having ads to proprietary
software!

in a not so far past we had the AdBard project, now closed :( of which dyne
was also part and we made a discrete amount of money to cover our hosting bills
with cool advertisements for those that make free software and have better
luck than us at rounding up money..

before and after that, we used google ads and it really helps.
the income from those ads is starting to become quite important, also
considering
my activity has no other sponsors and very few donations at the moment, to
the point even the developmnet of dynebolic had slowed down considerably, plus
I'm loosing my only part-time employement job in end of may, whatever...

back to the ads, already long ago on google I've started making a list of
domains
that in the google program are giving out proprietary software ads, which are
not
a "category" and have to be listed by hand... still is not enough and unwanted
ads
keep slipping in...

long story short, three proposals:

does someone has in mind to retry do something like AdBard?,

if not, should we try to share such a domain blacklist for our sites?

or can we try to lobby with Google to add a category to the ad program that says
"proprietary software" just like they do already for nudity, gambling and other
controversial categories?

I'm not really a big fan of commercials, but well there is nothing else that
looks
like generating an income out of Internet popularity and attention right now, at
least until we get Bitcoin to a better shape... :^)

ciao
