It's generally a good idea to get legal advice. But because lawyers are
expensive, one can't get legal advice on everything. One must select
the issues which are genuinely unclear. For example, newspaper editors
don't get their lawyers to check every article before publishing, only
the ones that they judge might cause defamation suits. It's not wise to
spend thousands of dollars getting a professional opinion on an
unlikely, theoretical situation.

I was not suggesting that one should "be illegal" either. If you know
that something is illegal, or are reasonably sure that it is illegal,
you shouldn't do it. But if after having done research I was 99%
certain that something was legal, and I couldn't forsee anyone actually
caring either way, then I wouldn't refrain from doing it.
