Since software that everybody can run, read, modify and share is in
effect not proprietary, that's just spinning.

In a similar vein that segregationists would have claimed that the
purpose of Lincoln was to destroy the economic base of humans as
property and economic material and investment, and cast them out into
the street.

Sure.  One way of putting it.

Well, the personal desire of RMS is to make proprietary software
irrelevant.  The GPL is a tool that makes sure that progress of free
software can't be turned against it and this goal.

So what?  Don't you have any personal aims?  Why would you not want to
make a difference towards a world that better meets your visions?
