David,

Compiling LilyPond is not very easy, but you should be able to do so
on any reasonably recent Linux distribution. Mandrake should probably
do fine.

There is no RedHat issue, apart from binary incompatibility with
Han-Wen's rpms for RedHat 7.0. Han-Wen is supplying those, because he
happens to have that distro installed (maybe someone should show
Han-Wen Debian), and RedHat does not package LilyPond for us, as
opposed to Debian and SuSE.

It is generally not a good idea to install foreign packages, even if
they're in the same package format, eg .rpm.

This means, that if you want to stay bleeding edge, you're choices
are: RedHat 7.0, Debian unstable, compiling it yourself.

Compiling LilyPond yourself:

 1. get lilypond-1.3.119
 2. tar xzf lilypond-1.3.119
 3. cd lilypond-1.3.119
 4. install the rpm packages mentioned in INSTALL.txt, from Mandrake
 5. ./configure
 6. make
 7. make install

If make fails, and you can fix it yourself, make a note, send an
addition for INSTALL.txt. If you can't fix it yourself, send the
relevant information, including the error, to this list. Hopefully
we'll fix it, add new instructions to INSTALL.txt, you try again.

I'll change the:

Precompiled i386 RedHat RPMS are available from
   `ftp://ftp.cs.uu.nl/pub/GNU/LilyPond/RedHat/'.

to

Precompiled RedHat-7.0 i386 RPMS are available from
   `ftp://ftp.cs.uu.nl/pub/GNU/LilyPond/RedHat/'.

for now. Maybe things become easier after gcc-3.0, maybe not.

Greetings,
Jan.
