There is no such thing as "most pressing effort" for a group of volunteers.
We share a common goal, and then we set our own schedule. Person A and
person B may work on different subtasks. If person A thinks that person B's
subtask is not very pressing (everybody has a right to his own opinion
after all), and convinces person B to stop this work, this does not mean
automatically that person B will continue to work on person A's preferred
subtask.

To pick up your example, working on "freeing Javascript" is a laudable
effort; but I am definitely not going to contribute to it, even if I were
to stop other activities.
