After Jash's first implementation, I made some further modifications and the
latest work on this task is now in the 'error' branch of Gnuastro on Codeberg
<https://codeberg.org/gnuastro/gnuastro/src/branch/error>.

We have made some good progress, but some work still remains to fully
integrate this into the library (follow from the commit messages).
