i sometimes do partial builds. touch; make
CPPFLAGS=-DDO_TRACE. yes, this is "custom". enabling traces globally
does not make much sense to me.

i didn't see any, likely because i only touched one file. this one
annoyed me, so i quickly "fixed" it.
