Being a lazy git I just use cobc -x -g -debug fred.cbl etc
Then when ready to run/test use:
./fred > fred.log 2> fred.err
subject to what your program is doing etc, the trace should be in fred.err
if prog uses screen normally omit '> fred.log '.
