I was able to run at least part of regress.pl on strategy.tst
yesterday with perl 5.6.1 under Linux. I did had to change
the name of the program from gnugo.exe to gnugo but otherwise
it ran right out of the box. I had to stop before finishing
and I did not see a crash.
