- new struct dfa_rt_t allows different run-time DFA structure from build-time 
- reduces executable size by more than 10%
- include crtdbg.h for VC builds. (includes useful debugging stuff).

Much simplified from the original patch.  There is a compile-time check to
make sure that the shorts are long enough.  Now, there was talk some time
ago about cross-compiling...
