If regression/Makefile contains:

.SUFFIXES: .t .tst

.tst.t:
        ./eval.sh $<

then 'make endgame.t' has the same effect as the old  'make endgame'.

Then since there are two Makefile targets endgame.tst and endgame.t 
I guess the filename completion would stop at endgame.t.
