Be aware that levels above 10 are "unsupported." What this means is that there is no particular guarantee that GNU Go will do what you want it to,
though it is likely that it will play better at higher levels.

From small runs of 8 or 10 game each, GG black playing against clusterGG
with global lookahead playing at level 10, we would agree:

1.1.1)  Log:    jan_29_01.log

                BLACK_HANDICAP  = 2
                BLACK_LEVEL     = 10

        Results:
                Game 1: W+37.5
                Game 2: W+62.5
                Game 3: W+12.5
                Game 4: W+10.5
                Game 5: B+11.5
                Game 6: W+4.5
                Game 7: W+44.5
                Game 8: W+14.5

1.1.2)  Log:    jan_30_01.log

Note: Only change compared with test 1.1.1 is increase the BLACK_LEVEL to 15.

                BLACK_HANDICAP  = 2
                BLACK_LEVEL     = 15

        Results:
                Game 1: B+51.5
                Game 2: W+15.5
                Game 3: W+10.5
                Game 4: B+1.5
                Game 5: W+26.5
                Game 6: W+18.5
                Game 7: W+22.5
                Game 8: B+56.5

We have done many runs and these results are typical.

In testing, I have had games (at level 18) where GNU Go spent many hours per move. This is a problem when playing on servers, because (I believe)
GNU Go currently only changes level settings between moves, so if
something of the sort happened it could lose on time.

All that said, I would be surprised if there was a problem setting the max
level to something a little conservative, like 12.

Here are some times. All times are cumulative for an 8 game set running on
a 1.25GHz dual G4 tower:

BLACK_LEVEL     = 10
NUM_GAMES       = 8

max black time: 23 sec
total black time: 3554 sec = 0 hr : 59 min : 14 sec

max black time: 22 sec
total black time: 2979 sec = 0 hr : 49 min : 39 sec

max black time: 21 sec
total black time: 2999 sec = 0 hr : 49 min : 59 sec

Max black time: 38 sec
Total black time: 2936 sec = 0 hr : 48 min : 56 sec

Max black time: 17 sec
Total black time: 3180 sec = 0 hr : 53 min : 0 sec

Max black time: 35 sec
Total black time: 3209 sec = 0 hr : 53 min : 29 sec

Max black time: 22 sec
Total black time: 2924 sec = 0 hr : 48 min : 44 sec

Max black time: 31 sec
Total black time: 2748 sec = 0 hr : 45 min : 48 sec

Max black time: 27 sec
Total black time: 2691 sec = 0 hr : 44 min : 51 sec

Average time per game = 6 min 20 sec

BLACK_LEVEL     = 15
NUM_GAMES       = 8

max black time: 224 sec
total black time: 14080 sec = 3 hr : 54 min : 40 sec

So, with much smaller statistics for level 15 we have an
average near 30 minutes a game, or about 4.75 times
as long.

Cheers,
David
