I managed to attach tool tips to the tab images. There are however a few quirks still associated with the job... working on it. Robin Dunn confirmed what I didn't want to hear (the solution has to be a hack -- see http://lists.wxwindows.org/cgi-bin/ezmlm-cgi?11:mss:16530:200302:ghphjhcobnopdahcmjda -- unless I change the wx code myself).
